About the 2024 laureate

Mezzo-soprano Monika Bohinec began her singing studies with baritone Jaka Jeraš at the Jesenice Music School. She then continued her education at the Secondary Music and Ballet School in Ljubljana in the class of Prof. Doroteja Cestnik-Spasić. She studied at the Salzburg Mozarteum and then at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna in the class of Prof. Claudia Visca. She made her debut with the SNG Opera and Ballet Ljubljana in 2006, when she performed the role of Clarissa in Prokofiev's opera Three Oranges. After completing her postgraduate studies with distinction in 2008, she was engaged to the ensemble of the National Theatre in Mannheim, where she worked until September 2011.

She has been a permanent member of the Vienna State Opera ensemble since the 2011/2012 season. At the Vienna State Opera, she has performed leading roles such as Eboli (Verdi / Don Carlo), Azucena (Verdi / Il Trovatore), Mrs. Quickly (Verdi / Falstaff), Ulrica (Verdi / Un Ballo in Maschera), Fenena (Verdi / Nabucco), Maddalena (Verdi / Rigoletto), Sara di Nottingham (Donizetti / Roberto Devereux), Cassandre (Berlioz / Les Troyens), Haze and the Princess (Dvořák / Rusalka), Polina and Daphnis (Tchaikovsky / Piqué Dame), Fricka (Wagner / Das Gold), Fricka (Wagner / Die Walküre), Walt Rheinraute (Wagner / Götterdämmerung), Erda (Wagner / Das Rheingold), Erda (Wagner / Siegfried), Magdalene (Wagner / Die Meistersinger), Hexe (Humperdinck / Hänsel und Gretel), Auntie (Britten / Peter Grimes), Mountain (Reimann / Medea)…

As a concert artist, she performed an evening of solo songs as part of the “Lied-Bühne” cycle in the Glass Hall of the Vienna Musikverein. Her participation in the traditional New Year's concert of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra in the Great Hall of the Vienna Concert Hall was also successful. She recently sang in Rossini's “Stabat Mater” in Lille, France. We should not miss her concerts in prestigious concert halls, such as the Philharmonie am Gasteig in Munich, the Wiener Musikverien (Goldener Saal, Brahms Saal, Gläserner Saal), the Wiener Konzerthaus, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Salle Pleyel in Paris, Carnegie Hall in New York, the Philharmonic in St. Petersburg, the Teatro Comunale di Bologna...

For her exceptional achievements in the cultural field, the Republic of Austria awarded her honorary Austrian citizenship in 2022.
